Finding Thesis Advisors

Writing a thesis is probably the most important aspect in a graduate program. Students need to acquire or develop skills necessary for conducting original research, analyzing data, and critical reading of scientific literature, and then write a thesis that clearly communicates the findings at the end of their graduate studies. Each graduate student in Department of Chemistry must choose a thesis advisor and join his/her research group. The roles of a thesis advisor include helping students set their thesis topic, providing necessary resources for conducting research, and monitoring students’ progress. Ultimately, it is important to seek a thesis advisor who can help individual student achieve their goals. Here are some steps you can take to find a suitable advisor:

  1. Schedule individual meeting with the professor. It is advised that you take a look of the research group’s website or read a few articles published by the professor before the actual meeting. You can discuss the ongoing research projects in the group, the expectations in terms of working hours and graduation requirements, and possible topics if you choose to join his/her group.
  2. Interview current and former students in the group to understand the working atmosphere from students’ perspective. It is also important to have a tour of the laboratories that you plan to join.
  3. If you are interested in an interdisciplinary project, seek opportunities of having two thesis advisors. Though you must make clear arrangements with both professors in order to minimize potential misunderstandings.

3. Changing Thesis Advisors

  1. The minimum period of time staying under the guidance of the same advisor (i.e. selecting the Project Training course) shall be 3 semesters for master students, and 4 semesters for doctoral students; students who intend to change their thesis advisors need to fill out the application form (download link) with signature from both current and new advisors. Credit for new Project Training course will be re-calculated.
  2. If a student intends to switch to a research group with no available student quota, it will be deducted from the quota of the following year.
